17th January – On this Day in History – 1912 PA NEWS PHOTO CIRCA : 1912 CAPTAIN ROBERT FALCON SCOTT (CENTRE, BALACLAVA) AND MEMBERS OF THE ILL-FATED BRITISH EXPEDITION TO ANTARTICA TO REACH THE SOUTH POLE. Upon arriving at the Pole , the small team of 5 men were devestated to learn that Norwegian explorer Ronald Amundsen had beaten them there. None of the 5 men survived the journey back to the base camp.
